Abstract

Birmingham City University’s (BCU) School of Computing, Telecommunications and Networks (CTN) teach a Microsoft Academy based theme in all ICT degrees based around Infrastructure Technologies. Currently lab sessions for these modules are delivered using desktop virtualisation on individual desktop PCs, typically one per student in a session. This is deemed an unsuccessful solution by students and staff, and the theme leader has asked for a more centralised system that is easier to manage, providing virtual machine deployment from one location rather than students having to suffer long start up times and heavy resource usage. Waterfall methodology is used to provide structure to this research and development of a solution. The labs provided use Microsoft Windows platforms, including Windows Server 2008, however an open-source cloud offering has been considered to keep costs down at the server end.
